Following the success of his play STEPPING OUT, actor and playwright Richard Harris joined composer Denis King and lyricist Mary Stewart-David to create a heart-warming, toe-tapping musical that follows the loves and laughs of a group of women (and one man) who attend a weekly tap class in a dingy North London church hall. STEPPING OUT enjoyed a hugely successful run on the West End and was the recipient of an Evening Standard Best Comedy Award.
As the story unfolds, the personalities, quirks, trials and tribulations of each of the characters is highlighted: Mavis, the ex-professional dancer who runs the class; bubbly Sylvia; nervous Andy and snobbish but well-meaning Vera. Confident and attractive Maxine; plain, fat Lynne; anxious Dorothy; larger than life Trinidadian Rose, and last but not least, Geoffrey - the lone widowed male. Accompanied on the piano by the lugubrious Mrs Fraser, the tappers start to conquer their inhibitions and improve … so much so that the show finale is a big, glitzy, perfectly executed tap routine that will have you up on your feet cheering! A mixture of "Rocky" and "A Chorus Line" STEPPING OUT was Liza Minnelli’s last feature film, where she performed along side Shelley Winters and Julie Walters.
The season at Theatre on the Bay will be directed by Paul Warwick Griffin, with Musical Direction by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.Starring: Anne Power · Dawn Lindberg · Michelle Levin Brenda Radloff · Lindy Abromowitz · David Vlok · Silindile Nodangala · Kathy Jo Ross · Elizabeth Frandsen
