JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Tue 20 June to Sat 05 Aug

"The best version of Jesus Christ Superstar that I have seen in 10 years!"
Sir Tim Rice at the Opening Night in Johannesburg - 12 April '06

Lyrics by TIM RICE

Music by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER

From Gethsemane to Golgotha - the unforgettable rock opera based on the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

From the creative team that brought you the critically acclaimed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat last year, this production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR introduces musical theatre audiences to a dynamic and surprising new talent in the form of Wonderboom's tattooed lead singer, Cito, who takes the challenging role of Jesus. Judas Iscariot is played by Robert Finlayson, who returns to South Africa after appearing abroad in lead roles in Fame, Miss Saigon, The Rocky Horror Show, and as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera on London's West End. Following his roles in CATS and Joseph, Anton Luitingh takes the part of Pontious Pilate, while Candida Mosoma, who most recently appeared in Joseph and Life at Centrestage, plays Mary Magdalene. One of the world's greatest stories in a dynamic new production that you just can't afford to miss!

"... phenomenal ... a mind-blowing show, leaving the audience in awe." Carina Van Heerden - The Citizen

"... magnificent ..." Barry Ronge - 702

"The casting of Wonderboom singer Cito, as Jesus Christ, is nothing short of inspired. His vocal quality and emotional depth make this an exceptional interpretation. Robert Finlayson is dazzling as Judas. As a spellbinding Mary Magdalene, Candida Mosoma earns star status. A heady mix, reinforced by a five-star ensemble. Blessed is the theatre goer!" Adrienne Sichel – The Star Tonight!

"... enormous dramatic and emotional impact ... both immediate and timeless." Robert Greig - Sunday Independent

Following the success of his play STEPPING OUT, actor and playwright Richard Harris joined composer Denis King and lyricist Mary Stewart-David to create a heart-warming, toe-tapping musical that follows the loves and laughs of a group of women (and one man) who attend a weekly tap class in a dingy North London church hall. STEPPING OUT enjoyed a hugely successful run on the West End and was the recipient of an Evening Standard Best Comedy Award.

As the story unfolds, the personalities, quirks, trials and tribulations of each of the characters is highlighted: Mavis, the ex-professional dancer who runs the class; bubbly Sylvia; nervous Andy and snobbish but well-meaning Vera. Confident and attractive Maxine; plain, fat Lynne; anxious Dorothy; larger than life Trinidadian Rose, and last but not least, Geoffrey - the lone widowed male. Accompanied on the piano by the lugubrious Mrs Fraser, the tappers start to conquer their inhibitions and improve … so much so that the show finale is a big, glitzy, perfectly executed tap routine that will have you up on your feet cheering! A mixture of "Rocky" and "A Chorus Line" STEPPING OUT was Liza Minnelli’s last feature film, where she performed along side Shelley Winters and Julie Walters.

The season at Theatre on the Bay will be directed by Paul Warwick Griffin, with Musical Direction by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.
